Food Allergies
A food allergy is a reaction to a particular protein found in a specific food. This reaction originates from the body's immune system, which protects us from potentially harmful substances. For most people, the many proteins found in food (such as milk, egg or soy protein) can be eaten without a restriction. However, for individuals who have food allergies, the body does not tolerate these common proteins. As a result, the immune system makes antibodies against these proteins. This leads to allergic reactions. Visit Health Canada for A Consumer's Guide to Managing Food Allergies.
